DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency officials say a 43-year-old man has been hospitalized after he was shot with a shotgun at a boat landing in Dorchester County.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials, the shooting happened Monday evening at Jellico's Landing on Highway 17A near the Edisto River.

Chief Barry McRoy said it all started when the victim was reportedly involved in an altercation which resulted in him being shot in the abdomen and arm with a shotgun.

McRoy said a friend of the victim's then attempted to transport the man by car to Colleton Medical Center.

Before the car got to the hospital, it was stopped by Cottageville Police in the 10000 block of Cottageville Highway.

Officers reported that they saw the victim and contacted firefighter-paramedics who arrived within minutes and treated the man; McRoy described the man's injuries as "severe."

A medical helicopter then landed in the area of Cottageville Elementary School on Pearce Road and transported the victim to the Trauma Center at MUSC.

A resident reported hearing the gunshot at the time of the incident and seeing law enforcement units close the area off as authorities investigated.

McRoy said the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
