Authorities identify victim in deadly St. Stephen house fire

ST. STEPHEN, SC (WCSC) -

Authorities identified the man killed in a house fire in Northern Berkeley County on Monday morning.

Harry Lee Middleton, 58, died from smoke inhalation at the fire on Beulah Tabernacle Road in St. Stephen, according to Berkeley County Chief Deputy Coroner George Oliver. After completing an autopsy, the coroner's office ruled Middleton's death accidental.

Fire crews found the victim inside near the front door of the single-wide trailer, which was destroyed by the fire, Oliver said.

Crews from the Forty One Rural, Bonneau and St. Stephen Fire Departments responded to the fire, according to St. Stephen Police Chief John Waters. The home was engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene, according to the coroner's office.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's and Coroner's Offices investigated the death, along with the State Law Enforcement Division, which is normal when a fire results in a fatality.

There is no word as yet on the cause of the fire.
