CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A new book tells the story of the oldest parish in South Carolina which played a key role in the early years of the Carolina colony.
The City of Charleston announced that a launch party for the new book is being held on Wednesday evening at the Old Exchange Building.
The book, "St. Philip's Church of Charleston- An Early History of the Oldest Parish in South Carolina," was written by Dorothy Middleton and Peg Eastman.
The parish was founded shortly after the Carolina colony was settled in 1670.
Since the parish was founded by the established Church of England, the church also oversaw elections, education, collecting taxes and other services ranging from health care to disaster relief.
