The town of Edisto Beach is mourning the loss of its mayor.
Burley L. Lyons, who became mayor in 1996, died on Wednesday, according to Edisto Beach Town Administrator Iris Hill. He was 80.
He previously been a town council member and had served the community for a total of 27 years.
"Edisto Beach has lost a great leader, friend and champion of Edisto Beach," Hill said in a statement.
On the town's official website, Lyons spoke fondly of his community.
"I truly believe that you and your family will find this scenic place an experience of a lifetime," he wrote in a "Message from the Mayor" on the site.
Arrangements will be announced when they are complete, Hill said.
