CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) is celebrating a record-breaking year for ridership Friday with a Customer Appreciation Day.

In 2014, the agency provided more than 5 million rides in a year for the first time, setting the annual system ridership record at 5,000,462. That figure represents a nearly 2.5 percent increase over 2013.

To celebrate the accomplishment and thank riders, CARTA has named Friday, February 6 Customer Appreciation Day.

CARTA staff will hand write more than 100 thank-you notes and place them randomly on buses, with each note containing gifts like tickets to local attractions, gift certificates, and free bus passes.

Staff will also be out at bus stops to personally thank customers throughout the day.

According to CARTA, there was an average of 15,694 weekday passengers in 2014, eliminating as many as 12,500 vehicle trips per day.
