CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Bond was set at $10,000 for a Johns Island woman who recently had 12 horses removed from her property.
Susan Rebecca Housley was arrested Friday morning and was in bond court Friday night facing two counts of ill treatment to animals.
The charges stem from an incident on Jan. 22 when a deputy responded to Housley's home on Plowground Road in reference to a welfare check on two Thoroughbread mares, ages 5 and 16.
An affidavit states the deputy reported that the horses were "severely underweight" and covered in "fungal dermatitis or 'rain rot.'"
Housley also voluntarily gave up several other horses she couldn't care for to the Charleston Animal society.
Authorities say all of the horses are now in local foster homes and under the care of Charleston Animal Society veterinarians.
