SC State selects Sen. Tim Scott as spring commencement speaker

ORANGEBURG, SC (WCSC) - Sen. Tim Scott will deliver the commencement address at the spring graduation at South Carolina State University, school officials say.

The Republican US senator will speak to nearly 400 students set to graduate on Friday, May 8.

Scott was the former representative for South Carolina's first congressional district when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed him to succeed former Sen. Jim Demint in 2012.

In November, Scott became the first elected African American to win a statewide race in South Carolina and the first African American senator from the South since Reconstruction.

Scott graduated from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.
