CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC - The Charleston County School Board has decided to cut ties with a consulting firm aimed at promoting diversity.
Axxis Consulting was hired last summer to help improve diversity within the district.
Monday night the board voted against a contract extension with the company whose interviews with students at Academic Magnet led district officials to call one of their football rituals racist last fall.
Diversity Consultant Kevin Clayton says he doesn't know if the Academic Magnet issue was the reason for the contract being dropped.
"I don't know why, but if it's based on performance, which the majority of vendor contracts are based on performance, I've never gotten any feedback that the performance work was not up to the standards, or it did not meet the objective in the scope of the contract," Clayton says. "So I can't read into other factors that were driving the decision."
