Third suspect arrested in arson of DD2 member's home

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators with the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office say a third suspect has been arrested in the arson of a Dorchester County School board member's home.

Dorchester County Sheriff's Office officials say Dwight Lee Valis II has been arrested and charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree arson.

Deputies previously arrested 19-year-old Christopher Ralph Lee Willis of Summerville on Feb. 6. on charges of first-degree burglary and third-degree arson, and 61-year-old Shelva L. Valis of Summerville was arrested on Feb. 9 and charged with first-degree burglary.

Authorities say the arrests stem from a Nov. 10, 2014 incident when someone started a fire at DD2 school board member Gail Hughes' home on Embassy Drive.

Capt. Tony Phinney said Shelva Valis is the sister of Gail Hughes, and detectives received credible information in the case that led to the arrest warrants.

According to Phinney, Shelva Valis, transported her stepson, Dwight Lee Valis II, and another person to Hughes's residence so the male suspects could burglarize and burn the home down.
