JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Joint Base Charleston is conducting a prescribed burn near the Weapons Station in North Charleston.

Personnel from the Air Force Woodland Fire Center and Joint Base Charleston are conducting the managed burn at the station's Eastside Ordnance area in the woodlands east of the small arms range.

The burn began Thursday morning at approximately and is expected to continue through 7 p.m., base officials say.

Officials ask residents in the area not to call 911 if they see smoke from that burn. Joint Base Charleston personnel can confirm authorized burning activity at (843) 764-7555.

Prescribed fires reduce natural fuel loads present in the woods, enhance timber and wildlife habitat, restore ecosystems and suppress forest diseases and pests, base officials say.
