SC Aquarium animals get head start on Valentine's Day treats

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Valentine's Day came a day early in the form of special holiday-themed treats for some of the animals at the South Carolina Aquarium Friday.

The aquarium's ring-tail lemurs received heart-shaped food puzzles that contained food, watermelon hearts and special fruit hearts.

Otters were given heart-shaped "fish pops" with smelt and also received food puzzles.

The aquarium's bald eagle received a special giant frozen heart packed with smelt.

The special treats, known as enrichments, are a critical part of providing the best animal care, aquarium spokesperson Kate Dittloff said. The aquarium provides various enrichments to their animals year-round.

Additional treats will be given to animals throughout the day on Valentine's Day, Dittloff said.
