COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency officials in Colleton County say a man died following a high speed crash this past weekend.
Authorities with the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department say the accident happened on I-95 near mile marker 55 on Sunday morning.
The accident was reported around 2:53 a.m. after a motorist reported hitting debris in the highway and noticing something red in the median.
Emergency crews arrived to find a pick-up truck, which had suffered massive damage, on the left shoulder of the road.
According to CCFR officials, it appeared the vehicle drifted off of the shoulder, entered the median and struck several large trees. Paramedics found the driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, heavily entrapped in the wreckage.
The coroner's office was notified and responded to the scene.
CCFR officials say crews utilized tools to remove the driver's side door, cut away several pieces of debris and displace the dash and floor.
A small dog was found alive in the floor board of the truck; animal control later arrived and took custody of the animal.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
