COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A bus honoring nine Purple Heart recipients is coming to Columbia.
The bus bears the likenesses of nine South Carolina veterans who were awarded the medal after being wounded in military service.
Columbia businessman Bill Dukes says the bus will be on display for the first time Thursday afternoon at Shandon Baptist Church. Dukes spearheaded the project and serves as a civilian adviser to the Secretary of the Army John McHugh.
Dukes says veterans featured in the project earned the awards during conflicts from World War II to Iraq.
He says the City of Columbia, Lexington County and Richland County contributed to help the bus become part of metropolitan Columbia's COMET bus system.
