COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - One person died and three people were injured following a Tuesday morning multi-vehicle accident on Highway 61 near the Colleton County-Dorchester County line.
Colleton County Fire and Rescue officials say they received information at 8:08 a.m. regarding an accident east of Peirce Road; initial information stated one adult was trapped, with two other adults and a child injured.
An off-duty captain/paramedic drove to the accident scene as it was being broadcasted on dispatch, helped the injured and told emergency officials that the person who was trapped in the vehicle had no signs of life, according to CCFR officials.
CCFR officials say it appeared a full sized pickup truck and a mini-van collided head-on on a bridge. A flatbed wrecker then collided with the back of the mini-van.
According to emergency officials, no one in the pickup truck or the wrecker was injured.
Dorchester EMS transported an adult and a child to MUSC in Charleston, while Medic 9 transported another adult patient to Colleton Medical Center.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The coroner has not released the name of the deceased.
Emergency officials say the highway was blocked for more than three hours.
