CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - SCE&G crews secured a gas leak that shut down streets Wednesday morning.

Market Street has reopened, but State Street will remain closed between South Market and Cumberland as crews continue to make repairs, according to the Charleston Fire Department.

SCE&G spokesperson Kim Asbill says contractors in the area hit a gas line while digging in the area.

South Market had been closed between Church and East Bay Streets Wednesday morning after the leak had been reported. Additionally, the open air portion of the City Market was evacuated as a precaution.

SCE&G officials confirmed crews are on the scene of the leak, reported near the corner of State and Linguard Streets.
