BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Emergency officials say one person died following an accident on I-26 in Berkeley County Thursday afternoon.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the accident happened around 1:37 p.m. one mile west of Exit 187 to Ridgeville.
The Berkeley County Coroner's Office says 20-year-old Daniel Meza Lira of Saluda died from the accident.
Chief Deputy Coroner George Oliver says Lira was traveling east on I-26 near mile marker 189 when he lost control of his pick up truck, crossed over into another lane and struck another vehicle; SCHP authorities say the other vehicle involved was an 18-wheeler.
The pick up then continued off the right side of the road and struck several trees.
The coroner's office has ruled his death as accidental. Authorities say Lira was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the 18-wheeler sustained no injuries.
