JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Six drivers have filed damage claims after a Live 5 News investigation into blown tires on the James Island Connector.
Our investigation revealed tires were going flat after some cars crossed over a temporary plate on the lane heading from James Island into Charleston.
The plate was put on the bridge last month after a truck ripped out an expansion joint from the bridge.
Authorities say the driver hit the expansion joint, ripped it out of place, and didn't stop.
Last week, DOT replaced the original plate with another one because a part of it was protruding.
A DOT official says drivers who file damage claims with them will be reimbursed if they fit the criteria.
