ST. GEORGE, SC (WCSC) - A St. George police officer narrowly escaped injury Thursday night when tried to stop a driver suspected of road rage, officials said.
Investigators say the suspect used his pickup to ram another vehicle while heading into town.
"Had run them off the road several times and had struck their vehicle several times," St. George Police Chief Brett Camp said.
He says the suspect tried to run down an officer who tried to stop him.
"My officer had to jump over part of his vehicle, over the hood of his vehicle to miss being struck from this vehicle," Camp said. "If he would have struck he would have been seriously injured if not killed."
About a quarter of a mile down the road, officers finally stopped the suspect.
With guns drawn, they approached the truck. Dash cam video shows the suspect fighting back after he is removed from the vehicle.
The officers handcuffed him and took him into custody.
Camp says the 51-year-old Reevesville man was taken to a hospital for evaluation and is facing charges of assault and battery 1st degree and resisting arrest.
