Charleston County deputies say the driver of a vehicle that plowed into a school bus in West Ashley Monday morning is facing multiple charges.
Antonio Fields was attempting to flee from authorities at the time of the wreck, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson. The initial reason for the pursuit was an improper lane change, Watson said.
Fields is now charged with failure to stop for a blue light, habitual offender, simple possession of marijuana and driving under the influence, Watson said.
The accident occurred on Magwood Drive at Ashley Crossing Drive around 8:05 a.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Fields reportedly drove down Magwood Road, where he crashed into a Charleston County school bus at Ashley Crossing Drive moments later.
Troopers say one student was on the bus at the time of the accident. The school bus driver was transported to St. Francis Hospital and the student was examined on scene and released. Fields was transported to MUSC to receive treatment for injuries, troopers say.
The accident is being investigated by Highway Patrol.
Fields was being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
