ORANGEBURG, SC (WCSC) - Orangeburg County deputies arrested a Rowesville man Thursday in the theft of $1,200 in tools stolen from the back of a pick-up truck and credited the community for information leading to that arrest.
Mark Eugene Creel, 51, is charged with larceny/petit or simple larceny - $2,000 or less, Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said.
On Tuesday, the sheriff's office released surveillance images and asked for clues to the identity of the man shown. Deputies responded to a home improvement store on North Road on Feb. 26 where a man reported the theft of tools from his truck while he was shopping inside.
Ravenell credited the community's help in leading to the arrest. He said deputies were able to return all of the stolen items to the victim.
"We are grateful to everyone for the phone calls for information about Creel," Ravenell said. "We are encouraged by the number of individuals that utilized our new text message service to provide anonymous tips."
The service allows anyone to text anonymous tips to "CRIMES" (274637) from any text-enabled cell phone. The text message must begin with the word "OCSOTIPS." Users can also click on the "submit an anonymous tip" button from the sheriff's office website: http://www.orangeburgcounty.org/OCSO/
