MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Mt. Pleasant's leaders voted to give themselves raises Tuesday.
The town's council voted 6-3 to almost double the pay of both the mayor and council members.
Council members make $8,751, but that's getting pushed to $15,000. The mayor's salary is going from $24,000 to $42,000.
Council's last raise was in 2006 and the mayor's was in 1996. The town looked at other cities as guide. Their new new salaries are now comparable to Myrtle Beach.
They said part of the reason for the raise was it's becoming expensive to run for office. The new salaries will start Dec. 1, 2015.
