JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police arrested a man accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of copper from a James Island plantation.
Travis Gillespie is charged with second-degree burglary and grand larceny, according to court records.
Police say the thefts happened on March 3 at McCloud Plantation on Country Club Drive, near where Folly Road intersects with Maybank Highway.
Police say the suspect, a former employee, was able to get into the plantation through a crawl space near a gate. Approximately $9,600 in copper line and downspouts were stolen from the property and an $8,000 heat pump condenser was damaged, according to a police incident report.
Gillespie has been arrested in the past for property thefts, the report states.
The victim told police he had recently fired Gillespie from a construction project on the property.
The plantation is currently closed to the public, but construction is expected to be completed this spring.
