CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Contracts for improvements to the Wando-Welch Terminal in Mount Pleasant so the terminal can handle a new generation of larger containerships are on the agenda of the board of the South Carolina Ports Authority.
The board meets Monday in Charleston.
In January the board agreed to spend $7 million to move three smaller cranes from Wando to its North Charleston Terminal. New cranes able to handle larger ships are planned to replace them at the Wando terminal.
It is part of an $80 million project of improvements at the Mount Pleasant terminal. Vice President Joe Biden visited the terminal last month to discuss how a federal transportation grant of $11 million is helping with the upgrades.
