CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Ginny Deerin announced her candidacy for Mayor of Charleston on Monday in an email to supporters.
“I've run a multi-million dollar non-profit organization and been a small business owner. I worked with Mayor Joe Riley, led community efforts in Charleston, and I'm a mother and grandmother,” Deerin said. “All of this has prepared me to take the reins at this pivotal point in Charleston's history and to help make Charleston an even greater city.”
A press release by Deerin stated that she fought to create new opportunities by helping win approval for Charleston Place, which spurred economic development in our city. Deerin has called the Charleston area home for nearly 40 years. She first became involved in city politics working on Joe Riley's first mayoral race forty years ago.
In 2011, she served as his campaign manager in his final election. Deerin lives in West Ashley, is a member of the LGBT community and has two adult children, a daughter-in-law, and two grandsons.
