FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - The first of two new Folly Beach bridges opened shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The bridge is for traffic leaving Folly Beach. The remaining bridge, which will take people to the beach, is expected to open soon.
With the weather warming up, there's been a lot more traffic to the beach, and a lot more backup while crews work around the clock to get it done.
This week, crews have been finishing paving of the on and off-ramps and roadway leading up to the new bridge, work that has forced some lane closures during the day.
Some have complained about the traffic backups.
Once the bridges open, crews will complete work on the Folly River Bridge which is closer to the beach. Their plan is to finish the remaining paving work on that bridge primarily at night to reduce the impact on traffic.
