BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Dorchester County investigators have charged a 23-year-old man in connection to a fatal accident that took the life of a 35-year-old man this past weekend.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office has charged Archie Lee Reid Jr. of Moncks Corner with failure to stop for blue lights.
Berkeley County Coroner George Oliver say Derrick Lawrence, the passenger of the vehicle, of Moncks Corner was pronounced dead on the scene following the single-vehicle wreck on Wildgame Road.
On Sunday night, a BOLO was broadcasted for a suspected intoxicated driver in Dorchester County.
When a deputy spotted the car on Orangeburg Road, the vehicle made a left turn on Dubose Road and began traveling on the wrong side of the road, deputies say.
According to the sheriff's office, when the vehicle the made a u-turn in front of the deputy's patrol car, the deputy activated his vehicle's emergency lights. The deputy reported the vehicle then accelerated and turned on Orangeburg Road, disregarded a stop sign and failed to stop for him.
A sheriff's office report states during the chase, the driver disregarded two stop signs and a red light, and drove his car at speeds of 75 mph.
At one point, authorities say the driver got onto Wildgame Road and sped through the road in speeds of excess of 65 mph.
The responding deputy said when he approached the 1100 block of Wildgame Road he saw saw the vehicle go around a sharp curve.
Once the deputy cleared the curve, he reported that he wasn't able to see any vehicles on the road, but as he drove along, he discovered debris in the roadway and power lines laying across the roadway.
When the deputy looked beyond the driveway of a nearby home, he saw headlights in the woods and smoke coming from the vehicle.
The deputy said the driver and passenger of the vehicle had been ejected with one of them, identified as Reid, conscious but disoriented.
An incident report states the passenger appeared lifeless and "was beyond any help at that time."
Highway Patrol and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office are investigating the accident.
