HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Still another South Carolina coastal community has gone on record against offshore drilling.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that Hilton Head Island Town Council agreed Tuesday to send letters to the state and federal governments in opposition.
Hilton Head Island is the fifth South Carolina municipality to go on record opposed to offshore drilling.
Beaufort and Port Royal earlier passed resolutions as did the Isle of Palms, Folly Beach and Edisto Island. Charleston and Myrtle Beach are expected to consider resolutions next week.
The federal government has been holding public meetings along the coast to gather comment on what should be included in environmental studies of the possibility of opening wide swaths off the coast of the Carolinas to offshore drilling.
