Charleston, SC (AP) - A widely publicized experiment by a small California winery in aging wine at sea off South Carolina is raising federal concerns that ocean water may contaminate such wine.
For two years, Mira Winery of St. Helena, California, has been submerging wine in Charleston Harbor to determine the effects of water, motion, light and temperature on aging.
But last week, the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau issued an advisory saying that ocean water pressure could cause contaminants to seep into the bottles. The agency said it will not issue any labels for ocean-aged products until the Food and Drug Administration determines they are unadulterated.
Mira President Jim "Bear" Dyke Jr. calls the advisory heavy handed and says it's not in the winery's interest to produce an adulterated product.
