DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

State education leaders named a Dorchester County middle school one of the four best schools in South Carolina Tuesday afternoon.

Gregg Middle School, the largest middle school in Dorchester County School District 2, received the Palmetto's Finest Schools award from the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

Gregg was one of eleven finalists for the honor, before being selected as one of only four winners.

Gregg Middle School is the only Tri-County school to have received the award, according to DD2 spokesperson Pat Raynor.

Raynor says 1,156 students attend the school in sixth through eighth grades.

"Under the leadership of Principal Lori Estep, the entire school community is united and dedicated to the vision of providing a safe, structured learning environment that promotes high expectations for student achievement and character development to encourage lifelong success," Raynor said in a statement.

Red Cedar Elementary School in Beaufort County was the only other Lowcountry school to receive the honor.

The other recipients were Oak Grove Elementary and Chapin High School, both in Lexington County, according to the association's website.

The announcement of the winning schools was made over SCETV Tuesday morning.

Winning schools receive statewide recognition and a plaque, as well as a "Palmetto's Finest School" banner, bumper stickers for all their staff members and a "Palmetto's Finest" lapel pin for the principal, the website states.
