NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - All lanes of eastbound I-526 near Rivers Avenue reopened Friday afternoon hours after a trailer full of pine straw caught fire just before noon.

Firefighters responded at 11:40 a.m. to the on-ramp to I-526 eastbound at Rivers Avenue, according to North Charleston Fire spokesperson Bianca Bourbeau.

All lanes were shut down at mile marker 18 as crews cleared the scene after firefighters put the fire out.

Once the fire was out, cleanup efforts continued to affect traffic in the area, Bourbeau said. Drivers were asked to avoid the Rivers Avenue eastbound on-ramp to I-526 early Friday afternoon until the vehicle could be removed from the scene.

Earlier, SCDOT cameras showed smoke billowing into the air from the trailer. Shaun Rippy, who shot video of the scene reported smelling smoke from the fire a mile away.

North Charleston Police also responded and North Charleston Fire officials said the SCDOT is also on the scene to oversee vehicle removal efforts.
