CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston firefighters were able to contain an early morning fire at a three-story duplex in the 40 block of Reid Street to a single bedroom Monday morning.

Units with the Charleston and St. Andrews Fire Departments responded at 2:15 a.m. to the fire. Firefighters reported smoke coming from the front of the building, but were able to extinguish the fire and contain it to a second-floor bedroom, according to Charleston Fire spokesman Ryan Kunitzer.

Smoke and heat damage occurred throughout the second floor, he said.

A tenant of the duplex discovered the fire and was able to get out of the home and was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Smoke alarms alerted additional tenants to the fire, allowing them to escape safely.

However, firefighters say multiple smoke alarms were either installed incorrectly or were missing batteries.

The Charleston Fire Department Fire Marshall Division is investigating the cause.
