COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina military and government leaders are gathering to honor the children of military families.
Gov. Nikki Haley is reading a proclamation on Thursday recognizing April as the month of the military child. The reading is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Statehouse lobby.
Haley is being joined by South Carolina Adjutant General Robert Livingston, who is head of the National Guard and the state's Military Department, along with Livingston's wife, Barbara, and members of their family.
Representatives from military installations throughout South Carolina also scheduled to attend.
The event is designed to point out the many challenges for children facing a parent or caregiver deploying far from home or is killed in combat.
