SLED: Fugitive attempted to run over US Marshal in W. Ashley

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has charged a 31-year-old man accused of attempting to run over a US Marshal in West Ashley.

SLED charged Brian Sherald with first-degree assault.

The charge stems from an incident on Tuesday afternoon off Savannah Highway in West Ashley when the US Marshals Office and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office were attempting to capture Sherald who was wanted for an outstanding bench warrant.

Authorities located Sherald and conducted a traffic stop.

According to an affidavit, as law enforcement officers were instructing Sherald to stay in his vehicle, Sherald placed his vehicle in drive towards a US Marshal and attempted to strike him.

Investigators say the victim, in fear for his safety and well being, had to quickly move out of the way to avoid being run over.

The marshal also fired gunshots at Sherald as the fugitive attempted to drive away in his car, South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said.

Sherald was then taken into custody after a brief pursuit, according to US Marshals Chief Deputy Rick Long.
