Recognition Day 2015 comes for Citadel freshmen

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Recognition Day 2015 arrives on Saturday for the freshman class at The Citadel. The freshmen will be officially sworn in, advancing from their fourth class status to members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Following a year of experience similar to military boot camp and a three week examination period, the freshmen will rise with the sun for hours of intense physical assessments and drills. At 10:30 a.m. they will go to Summerall Field to begin The Gauntlet obstacle course.

Afterward, freshmen will walk the Recognition Day March, a rite of passage that has been practiced for over a century. The march begins at 3 p.m. at the college's main gate. The route follows Moultrie St., turns right on King St., and concludes on Marion Square.

Freshmen will don their white uniforms for "The Oath Renewal on The Citadel Green" at 3:30 p.m.

Drivers should be aware that roadways Moultrie, Rutledge, and King will be temporarily closed while the march is proceeding. The march is expected to last for approximately 30 minutes.
