LADSON, SC (WCSC) - A friend of Walter Scott's says he forgives the North Charleston police officer charged with Scott's murder.
"I'm a Christian, I forgive him. It's in our our heart to forgive," said Dennis Dye."I mean it's the only way you can live and the only way you can get to heaven...but you know he's going to have his judgment day."
Dye said he's known Scott ever since November of last year when the two began working together at Brown Distribution in Ladson.
"He picked up the [job] real fast, learned the trade and was just an outstanding worker," Dye said.
Dye last saw Scott the day before Scott was shot to death in North Charleston. On April 3, Dye said Scott offered him a ride after recently buying a car after having trouble with his van.
"He gave me a ride home and that was the last time I saw him," Dye said.
It wasn't until the day after the shooting that Dye said he learned about Scott's death.
"My supervisor called me Sunday afternoon and said,'Did you read the paper? Because I think Walter is in the paper,'" Dye said."I said,'No, that couldn't be Walter.' Fighting police and stuff like that...that wasn't in his his nature."
Dye said he was in disbelief after confirming Scott's death and seeing the video showing the incident.
"It just hit me," Dye said."I just talked to him Friday. I couldn't believe it at first. It was shocking."
According to Dye, Scott had just been recently engaged, ready to marry his long time girlfriend.
Dye said Scott was happy and ready to settle down.
Dye describes Scott as a charismatic man and someone who would give "you the shirt off his back."
"He would go out of his way just to speak to you to see how you were doing, how your day was going," Dye said."He was just a cool natured person, never had any problems with him."
Dye calls Scott's death senseless and pointless.
"It's shocking. It's a small world and it hit home," Dye said."He was almost like a brother to me. It's just hard. He was a great guy. He will truly be missed here, outside of work too. He was that type of guy."
