Accreditation group at SC State University

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A panel that will make recommendations on the accreditation of South Carolina State University is at the Orangeburg school to review operations.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges had placed the state's only historically black public college on probation. The commission cited financial and governing issues at the school.

A vote on accreditation is expected in June. The commission could lift the probation, continue the probation for one more year or remove the school's accreditation.

If South Carolina State loses its accreditation, its students would no longer be eligible for federal financial aid.

South Carolina State is struggling with debt and fired President Thomas Elzey last month.
