CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It started with an email stating she had won $1 million.
"I thought it was fake," the Charleston woman told lottery officials. A follow-up phone call from the South Carolina Education Lottery proved otherwise.
Officials say the woman won the $1,000,000 Fortune Second-Chance Drawing after submitting a losing scratch-off ticket. The Charleston woman's ticket was one of more than 600,000 entries.
According to the SC Education Lottery, second-chance winners are notified by phone, email, and certified letter based on the information provided upon entry.
In the event that you receive a call saying you are a winner, lottery officials have a few tips to avoid possible scammers. Officials say they will never ask for money in return for a prize, and winners should never give out personal or banking information over the phone.
