CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Fire Department will spend the next four months conducting preventive maintenance and flushings of fire hydrants throughout downtown Charleston.
Fire hydrants will be checked between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Fridays. Crews will wear traffic safety vests while working, and ask for motorists to use caution.
Officials say crews will be performing basic preventative maintenance to ensure the hydrants are in proper operational order. Maintenance will include inspection for damage, removing and checking caps, cleaning and lubricating all threaded outlets, water pressure checks, and flushing the hydrants to clear out possible debris.
According to a release, water customers in the immediate area of the work may experience temporary water discoloration. Customers are advised to run all water faucets for a few minutes if this occurs.
