CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - People throughout the U.S. are tweeting about getting free coffee at some Starbucks stores following a nationwide "point of sale register outage."
According to Starbucks officials, the company is working actively to resolve the outage and stores will remain open and "continue to serve our customers."
Customers in Charleston and North Charleston tweeted Friday evening that Starbucks stores were giving away free drinks because of the outage.
However, some people have tweeted out pictures of their local Starbucks closing due to the technical issues.
National media outlets had reported that the Starbucks computers crashed late Friday afternoon.
Starbucks released the following statement Friday night:
We are aware of the point of sale register outage at company-operated Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada. We are actively working to resolve the outage and our stores will remain open and continue to serve our customers. The outage was caused by a failure during a daily system refresh. We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience or confusion and will update this statement once systems are back online. This outage also affects our Evolution Fresh and Teavana stores.
