NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A large autoclave is now curing composite parts at Boeing's new Research and Technology Center in North Charleston.

The aeronautics giant announced on Wednesday that the autoclave, which is 10 feet by 35 feet, is in use and curing nonproduction parts developed at the center. The center conducts research for the company's commercial aviation as well as its defense, space and security operations.

An autoclave uses heat and pressure to bond layers of carbon fiber. The research center opened last November.
