JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

A 49-year-old man is behind bars after police say he punched a store manager who had caught him shoplifting and offered to let him go if he left the merchandise.

The Charleston Police Department arrested Christopher Allen Odom on Tuesday and charged him with strong armed robbery.

Odom's arrest stems from an incident Monday night at the Dollar Tree on Folly Road in James Island.

The store manager said he saw Odom enter the store and go to the back area to look at merchandise.

According to the victim, when he saw Odom leave, he noticed he had several large bulges coming from his shirt that were not there when he walked in.

The victim said he told Odom to drop whatever he had placed under his shirt and leave the store.

A police report states that the victim went as far to tell Odom that if he left the merchandise he would not even call the police.

The victim said Odom then began to yell obscenities at him, then punched him in the face.

CPD officials say Odom then fled the store with the stolen merchandise.

The victim told officers he wasn't sure what Odom stole, but based on the bulges in Odom's jacket, he assumed that they were packages of meat or some large boxes.
