NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston apartment fire Thursday morning displaced 20 people and injured one North Charleston firefighter, authorities say.
Crews responded to the fire on Mountainbrook Avenue at the Ashley Village Townhomes off Ashley Phosphate at 8:41 a.m., according to North Charleston Fire Marshal Cindy Killette.
First responders reported flames and heavy smoke coming from the two-story, six-unit building. Killette said the fire spread quickly through a common attic space that was not required to have fire walls at the time the building was constructed.
Firefighters battled the fire for approximately 40 minutes to bring it under control.
One firefighter was transported to MUSC with non-life threatening injuries. He was treated and released, Killette said.
No other injuries were reported among the 13 adults and seven children displaced by the fire.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the victims and the Coastal Chaplaincy is also on the scene.
The Ashley River Fire Department also assisted with battling the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
