CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Lowcountry Giving Day, a 24-hour local online giving challenge to support community foundations, helped raise more than $4 million for local organizations.
The annual event supporting Lowcountry non-profits and local ran Tuesday at 12 a.m. through 11:59 p.m. Once the 24-hour period ended, the final donation totaled 14,285 gifts for $4,069,965.05.
The Coastal Community Foundation once again hosted the online giving website. Donors and supporters were encouraged to give online at lowcountrygivingday.org. After giving, donors were encouraged to Tweet, Facebook, and Instagram using the hashtag, #LiftTheLowcountry. This year, CCF aimed to support about 180 nonprofits along the South Carolina coast.
You can donate to one specific group or make multiple donations as well. Donors have already committed $3 million in incentive funds to motivate giving during the day.
The event also part of a much larger national effort called "Give Local America." You can see the final results for South Carolina at givelocalamerica.org. Coastal Community Foundation ranked 5th nationally in contributions and 6th in total gifts.
This year's Lowcountry Giving Day surpassed 2014, when more than 7,000 donations raised $4 million for about 90 participating non-profit groups.
