ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WITN/CNN) - An eight-year-old boy was airlifted to a Greenville hospital after being seriously injured by three pit bulls in North Carolina.
Police say the dogs attacked him outside his mobile home in Onslow County.
The victim suffered injuries to his upper body, neck and ear, according to authorities. The boy's older brother said the dogs had lived with them for some time and only one was ever aggressive.
Neighbors say they say the boy walk out of the home and the dogs attacked him.
"The little guy was coming out the door and I think the dogs were following him out, and by the time they got outside, the dogs they started attacking him," neighbor Anthony Love said. "Everybody was running around hysterically, trying to get the dogs off of him and then sheriffs came, the sheriff shot a couple of the dogs, the rest of them they took the pound, I guess, wherever they take them to."
One of the dogs died and another was injured. The two surviving dogs are in animal control's custody.
The sheriff says the child's parents were not at home at the time, but arrived during the attack.
The sheriff's office is investigating and considering whether to file charges, he says.
