SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say they are investigating a fatal shooting of a 16-year-old Summerville boy.
On Sunday night, Summerville police responded to a home on Avonshire Drive for a report of a shooting involving a teenager.
The responding officer said he saw the victim, who had a gunshot wound to his head, in the bedroom of the house along with a 9mm firearm underneath the teen's left elbow.
According to two witnesses who were in the room, the victim pulled the gun out, danced around and played with the gun for 3 to 5 minutes before the firearm was discharged.
The witnesses say the victim was standing up in front of a mirror, but were unable to say which direction he was facing, and stated they did not see what exactly the victim was doing when the gun fired.
The witnesses told investigators that they did not know where the victim got the gun; one of the witnesses said the victim had the gun for "1-2 weeks."
Both of the witnesses said they had not touched the gun, and it had not been fired until the incident. The witnesses told officers that the victim never mentioned wanting to harm himself.
Four other witnesses who were in the house reported hearing a gunshot and screaming.
The mother's victim said she was in the bathroom when she heard screaming and saw her son on the floor.
The mother said her husband then called 911.
According to police, the victim's father said he did not know how his son obtained the gun or who it belonged to.
The Coroner's Office is investigating to determine the manner of death.
