GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) -

Goose Creek police say an unidentified man has falsely portrayed himself as representing a home security company.

On its Facebook page, the department posted a photo of the man they say recently visited a home in Boulder Bluff and falsely claimed to be a salesman for ADT.

"This is a common tactic practiced by thieves and burglars," the post reads.

In a statement, ADT says consumers should follow these tips to prevent being victimized by security scammers:

  • Ask for photo identification and/or a business card from the person at the door
  • Don't be pressured into agreeing to new equipment or signing a contract
  • Request literature be left behind so you can study it before taking action
  • Call your current security company to confirm what a sales rep or telemarketer tells you

Anyone with information or who has interacted with the man is asked to call the Goose Creek Police Department at (843) 572-4300 so that an investigator can follow up.
