Conservative think tank holds free speech debate over bill

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A conservative South Carolina think tank is sponsoring a debate about when and how the U.S. Constitution allows states to regulate political speech by nonpartisan organization.

The South Carolina Policy Council's debate is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Capstone Building at the University of South Carolina.

South Carolina Press Association Executive Director Bill Rogers will moderate the discussion over legislation filed in response to a 2010 federal court ruling. The Policy Council thinks the new rules go too far in restricting speech allowed under the U.S. Constitution.

Joining Policy Council President Ashley Landess to debate are Republican Rep. Rick Quinn of Lexington, League of Women Voters Vice President Lynn Teague and former Opinion Editor of The State newspaper Brad Warthen.
