New SC State Board of Trustees to meet for the 1st time

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State University's seven new trustees are scheduled to meet for the first time.

They will jump right into their new jobs on Wednesday, getting presentations on the school's $23 million debt from the State Budget and Control Board, its poor financial situation from its auditor and the overall state of the university from acting president Franklin Evans.

The new board was appointed last week after the Legislature passed a bill firing the old trustees. SC State has gone into massive debt over the past several years as enrollment dropped, but spending was not cut.

The school is also awaiting word on whether it can keep its accreditation. Without accreditation, South Carolina's only public historically black university would likely have to close.

The meeting begins at 10:30 a.m.
