CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police continue the search for a gunman in a Friday night shooting that sent a man and a 5-year-old boy to the hospital.
According to the Charleston Police Department, the shooting took place at approximately 8:46 p.m. in a courtyard in the Wraggborough housing development near Mary and America streets.
Both victims were taken to MUSC. Police say the man has since been released from the hospital, while the 5-year-old remains hospitalized. At last check, the boy's condition was listed as serious.
Investigators say there is no suspect information at this time.
"This is another senseless tragedy with an innocent victim," Chief Greg Mullen said. "We need all members of the community to assist us in quickly locating this violent criminal, who seriously injured a 5 year-old child. This act clearly demonstrates their lack of regard for the safety of this child."
Mullen said additional patrol officers and detectives are working the case to bring a quick resolution.
"It is crucial that we identify this violent offender quickly before they can harm anyone else in our community," Mullen said.
Multiple police officers were spotted in the area Friday night blocking off a portion of the road at America and South streets after witnesses reported hearing several shots.
A K-9 unit and more police units were seen responding to the area around 10:55 p.m.
One resident said it was distressing to have this happening in his neighborhood.
