Student-led 5K brings almost 100 runners to West Ashley High School

Almost 100 runners and walkers trekked around West Ashley High School's campus Saturday morning for an inaugural 5K.

The event was student led and organized, aiming to raise funds for DECA.

The competitive business club prepares high school students for marketing and entrepreneurial fields.

Jerome Smalls spearheaded the event and was all smiles as the participants prepared for the 8:30 am start time

"That's a great number for a first year like this," said Smalls.

The money raised will help fund DECA's trip to Nashville next year, but Smalls said the race also serves a bigger purpose.

"West Ashley has been a school that's never been too connected with the community," said Smalls. "So, we want to connect with the community and the school in a more creative way. So, we thought a 5K involving the community, one of the first 5K's just here in West Ashley, would be a really creative and innovative way for us to handle that problem."

Smalls will be graduating from West Ashley High School this year but said he hopes the event gains momentum in future years
